If you’re interested in the differences between the sizes of different types of sports courts, from different sports codes, you’ve come to the right place. Simply continue reading in order to discover the standard sport court size, for a wide variety of popular sports. You may be surprised to learn that while some sports require their court sizes to adhere to exact measurements, there are a few sports which have more relaxed requirements, when it comes to average court sizes.
Standard sport court sizes:
Basketball:
In the NBA a regulation court measures 94 feet long by 50 feet wide. However the standard basketball court size for high school competitions is slightly smaller. In the US high school basketball courts measure 90 feet long by 84 feet wide. While junior high courts are even smaller and only measure 74 feet long by 42 feet wide.
Soccer:
Soccer fields vary greatly in size. However, legally each soccer field must measure at least 100 yards in length and must be at least 50 yards wide. There is also maximum size restrictions on soccer fields. A regulation soccer field must also be smaller than 130 yards long and must be narrower than 100 yards. As long as soccer pitches are within the minimum and maximum measurements which were mentioned, they can be deemed regulation soccer pitches.
However while soccer fields are allowed to differ in size, within reason, most sports require their standard sport court sizes to fit exact measurements. So think of soccer’s pitch regulations as an anomaly.
Football:
NCAA football pitches are all the same size, unlike soccer pitches. A NCAA regulated football pitch must measure 120 yards in length and 53 and 1/3 yards in width.
Hockey:
Hockey rinks are also the same size and measure 200 feet in length and 85 feet in width. The size of each goal must measure 6 feet in width and 4 feet in height.
Tennis:
Tennis courts around the world usually follow a set international standard and are supposed to be 120 feet long and 60 feet wide. Furthermore the height of a tennis net should be 3 feet high. If you measure each tennis net, from the center of the tennis net. While some community run tennis clubs may feature tennis courts which vary slightly from this standard, every professional tennis tournament must adhere to the size regulations which were mentioned above.
Baseball:
Most of the measurements of a standard baseball park are predetermined. As examples, the average baseball court should measure 60 feet and 6 inches from the home plate to the pitcher’s box. While the plate to second base should always measure 127 feet and 3 3/8 inches. While the distance between the rest of the plates should always measure exactly 90 feet. The pitcher’s plate should measure 24 inches by 6 inches and the batter’s box should measure 4 feet by 6 feet.
Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the average court sizes of some of your favorite sports. Some of which may have to fit a predetermined standard. While others may be allowed to differ in size.
